By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, Jose Abelardo Mai, is currently in Palenque, Mexico, for a meeting of the Comité Internacional Regional de Sanidad Agropecuaria (CIRSA), the governing body of the Organismo Internacional Regional de Salud Agropecuaria (OIRSA).

OIRSA is responsible for safeguarding plant and animal health across Central America and works closely with national agencies, including Belize’s BAHA.

A major topic at the CIRSA meeting in Chiapas is the management of the New World Screwworm, a significant agricultural concern.

During his visit, Minister Mai also met with Dr. Jorge Berdegué Sacristán, Mexico’s new Secretary of Agriculture, to discuss both the screwworm issue and Belize’s cattle export status to Mexico.

Joining Minister Mai in Chiapas is Belize’s Ambassador of Investment, Jaime Briceño.
