By Rubén Morales Iglesias: As the Central Secondary Schools Sports Association (CSSSA) Basketball Championships conclude with an action-packed day at Swift Hall in Belize City on Saturday, December 7, all eyes are on Gwen Lizarraga High School to see if they can secure both the boys’ and girls’ titles.
Gwen Lizarraga High School is making a significant impact in the CSSSA with both their boys’ and girls’ teams reaching the finals.
Boys’ Basketball Final: Gwen Liz vs. SJC Wildcats
Defending champions Gwen Lizarraga High School boys’ team will be looking to repeat last year’s victory in the CSSSA Boys Championship. They will face off against St. John’s College (SJC) Wildcats in a what is expected to be a thrilling rematch of last year’s final. Gwen Liz won that encounter 74-66 and went on to win the National Secondary Schools Sports Association (NSSSA) championship and a silver medal at the Central American Under-18 CODICADER Games in El Salvador.
On Monday, the top-seeded Gwen Liz boys’ team advanced to the final with a 40-29 victory over fourth-seeded Wesley College. Captain Augustine Pitterson led Gwen Liz with 12 points, supported by Raymond Gentle Jr., who added 9 points. Wesley’s Deon Bennett scored 9 points for his team.
On Tuesday, the third-seeded SJC Wildcats secured their place in the final by defeating the previously undefeated Maud Williams High School 48-42. Key players for SJC included Daniel Musa, who scored 18 points, and Edward Thompson, who added 16 points. Maud Williams’ standout player, Jason Orosco, scored an impressive 33 points in the match.

Girls’ Basketball Final: Gwen Liz vs. Wesley College
The undefeated Gwen Liz girls’ team will also be competing in the finals, taking on Wesley College. During the regular season, Gwen Liz narrowly defeated Wesley 11-9, setting the stage for an intense final matchup.
Gwen Liz girls triumphed over fourth-seeded Pallotti High School in their semifinal on Monday while Wesley College secured a 19-12 victory over Edward P. Yorke High School on Tuesday. Cedella Lanza led Wesley with 13 points. Jeniyah Welch scored seven points for Edward P. Yorke.
Third-Place Games
The third-place games will also take place on Saturday morning. In the boys’ category, Maud Williams High School face Wesley College. Maud Williams, the second seed entering the playoffs, will seek redemption after their semifinal loss to SJC.
In the girls’ category, Edward P. Yorke High School will compete against Pallotti High School for the consolation match. Both teams aim to end their season on a positive note with a victory.
