By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexican authorities have broken up two small migrant caravans heading to the U.S. border, activists reported Saturday.
Some migrants were bused to cities in southern Mexico, while others were offered transit papers, AP reports.
This follows U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s recent threat of 25% tariffs on Mexican goods unless the country takes stronger action against migration.
Trump claimed Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum had agreed to curb unauthorized crossings, and Sheinbaum confirmed that migrants were being managed before reaching the border.
One caravan, which started on Nov. 5 in Tapachula, had about 2,500 migrants but was dispersed in Tehuantepec, where many accepted bus rides to other cities.
A second caravan, with 1,500 people, was offered a 20-day transit visa after reaching Tonala. Migration officials said the migrants willingly chose the bus rides to avoid further risks.
The recent crackdown appears to align with an agreement between Mexico and the U.S., though details remain unclear.
Migrant caravans have faced continuous obstacles, with many being halted or returned by Mexican authorities.
