By Rubén Morales Iglesias: On Friday, Ocean Academy boys’ basketball team faced a tragic accident while heading to the Regional High School Basketball Competition, leaving their teacher-coach and three players hospitalized and in urgent need of CT scans. In response to the Caye Caulker Village Council’s call for help, the San Pedro Pirates Club has stepped forward with a fundraising initiative.

During their home game of the Premier League of Belize final against Port Layola on Saturday night, the Pirates will donate $5 from every cash entrance fee towards the critical CT scans needed by the injured coach and players. Additionally, a donation box will be available at the entrance of the San Pedro Pirates-Port Layola match for contributions.

This initiative underscores the community’s solidarity and the unifying power of sports in times of need.

The Caye Caulker Village Council highlighted the severity of the situation, noting that while several students and teachers received cuts and fractures, a number of them were more seriously hurt. Three students and one teacher who were hospitalized required urgent CT scans, with one student requiring about eight scans alone. The Council explained that the scans are vital for providing detailed reports of the injuries, enabling immediate and accurate assessments.

The Council said it had already begun funding some of these scans but emphasized the need for community support to cover all expenses. They remain hopeful for a full recovery for the injured individuals and are asking for both financial assistance and prayers from the community.

The San Pedro Pirates asked fans who are unable to attend the match but would like to help to donate online to the account posted by the Caye Caulker Village Council. The Council said donations can be made online via the provided banking information and asked that the donations be labeled as ‘Assistance for students’. The Council noted that their Atlantic Bank account number is 100 073 949.

The San Pedro Pirates closed their plea asking fans to show ‘some love’ and support the high schoolers of their sister island, Caye Caulker, during this challenging time.
