By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Belizean journalist Cherisse Halsall, a Master’s student at the Missouri School of Journalism, has been named the 33rd David Kaplan Memorial Fellow.

The prestigious fellowship includes a $10,000 stipend and a full-time, paid position at the ABC News Washington Bureau, where Halsall will rotate through various roles during the spring semester.

Halsall brings broadcast reporting experience from her years at 7News Belize, along with a brief consulting role at CBS News.

At ABC, Halsall aims to build on her experience as a national correspondent in Belize, aspiring to a career in network news.

“I want to make myself indispensable,” she said, reflecting on her goal to learn different aspects of network news production.

Professor Amy Simons praised Halsall’s diverse skill set, while Audrey Taylor from ABC News highlighted her fresh perspective on American political journalism.

Halsall’s background in field reporting, including covering a traumatic car accident in Belize, has shaped her understanding of journalism’s power to inform and comfort.

As she embarks on the Kaplan Fellowship, Halsall continues to develop her expertise at KOMU-TV, where her hands-on experience fits well with the School of Journalism’s “Missouri Method.”

“I want to be a national correspondent for network news. Right now, I’m going behind the scenes in order to learn how network news works from many different perspectives. I want to make myself indispensable,” Halsall stated.

“This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity will take me to Washington, D.C., where I’ll work alongside some of the most brilliant journalists in the business. As part of the Kaplan Fellowship, I’ll be contributing to ABC’s dynamic coverage of major national and international news, field producing stories, and sharpening my investigative reporting skills on the biggest platforms in the industry,” Halsall expressed.

Halsall also thanked her mentors.

“I couldn’t have achieved this without the incredible guidance and mentorship of my professors at Mizzou, especially Mark Horvit and David Estrada, as well as the unwavering support from newsroom leaders like Jules Vasquez, Holly Edgell and Josh Yager, who have believed in me every step of the way,” she added.

The David Kaplan Fellowship honors the legacy of ABC News producer David Kaplan, who was killed in 1992 while covering the Bosnian War.

The fellowship, supported by ABC’s Sam Donaldson and colleagues, is awarded to students at the Missouri School of Journalism.
