By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Thursday, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his former defense minister Yoav Gallant, and several Hamas officials, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity linked to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
The charges relate to Israel’s actions in Gaza, including depriving civilians of essential supplies, and Hamas’ attacks on Israel, which began in October 2023.
According to AP, Netanyahu rejected the warrant, calling the actions “absurd and false,” while U.S. President Joe Biden and Israeli leaders condemned the move as disgraceful.
President Biden blasted the prosecutor and expressed support for Israel’s right to defend itself against Hamas.
Hamas also slammed the request.
The warrants for Hamas leaders Mohammed Deif, Yahya Sinwar, and Ismail Haniyeh are linked to the October attacks, which resulted in the deaths of around 1,200 Israelis and the abduction of others.
Although the ICC has no police force to enforce its warrants, the charges could complicate travel for Netanyahu and Gallant to countries that are ICC members.
However, Israel and the U.S. are not part of the court, and the practical implications of the warrants remain unclear.
Human rights groups have praised the decision, calling it a significant step in holding individuals accountable for atrocities, while Israeli opposition leaders criticized the move as morally blind.
The ICC’s case is distinct from a separate legal battle Israel is facing at the International Court of Justice over allegations of genocide.
The conflict has resulted in the deaths of over 40,000 Palestinians and widespread destruction in Gaza.
