By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Under-16 Belize Girls National Team (BGNT) lost 2-1 against Nicaragua in their first game of the 2024 Central American Football Union (UNCAF) FIFA FORWARD Under-16 Girls Championship being held in Managua, Nicaragua, in November.
Belize’s goal was scored by Shanalee Smith of Holy Ghost RC School, MVP of the primary schools’ championship. Smith was assisted by 14-year-old Betsy Perez from the Belize High School of Agriculture. Perez was MVP of the Bishops Cup held at the FFB Stadium in 2023.
At the time, Smith’s goal in the 68th minute, tied the match 1-1, but Nicaragua scored the game winner in the 85th minute.
In the other group match on Wednesday, Panama routed El Salvador 5-1.
Belize’s next Group A match will be against El Salvador on Friday, November 8, at 8:00 pm. The U16 BGNT will close group play against Panama on Sunday, November 10, at 8:00 pm.
In Group B, Guatemala pounded invited guests, Cuba, 4-0, while Costa Rica blanked Honduras 3-0.

- Wednesday, November 6, 2024: Nicaragua vs. Belize at 5:30 pm
- Friday, November 8, 2024: Belize vs. El Salvador at 8:00 pm
- Sunday, November 10, 2024: Panama vs. Belize at 8:00 pm
