By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: In efforts to raise awareness about the New World Screwworm (NWS) among local farmers and residents, sensitization is currently ongoing in several villages throughout the Toledo District.
Sensitization is being conducted by technical officers from the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA), the Belize Livestock Producer’s Association, the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), and the Ministry of Agriculture.
This outreach initiative aims to inform and empower communities about the risks posed by this pest and the measures needed to protect livestock and household pets.
The technical officers have visited villages where they are engaging with farmers, homeowners, and residents, sharing essential information on identifying and managing NWS cases.
Through meetings and one-on-one interactions, the team provides guidelines on best practices for prevention and management of the pest to ensure that communities are equipped with the knowledge needed to protect their animals and livelihoods.
The New World Screwworm is a parasitic infestation that targets warm-blooded animals, including livestock, pets, and even humans.
The larvae invade open wounds and feed on live tissue, which can lead to severe health complications or even death in untreated cases. The disease presents a serious economic and animal welfare concern, especially in rural areas where livestock and farming are vital to household income.
“The Ministry of Agriculture and its partners at BAHA, BLPA, OIRSA and IICA remain committed to supporting the agricultural community in addressing this issue through ongoing educational campaigns and technical assistance. So far 20 communities have been visited and sensitized,” the Ministry noted.
