By Rubén Morales Iglesias: On Tuesday, October 29, the International Regional Organization for Plant and Animal Health (OIRSA) celebrated its 71st anniversary with a ceremony to kick off its Regional Agricultural Health Day.
The event underscored OIRSA’s enduring commitment to protecting agricultural production across the region and highlighted the necessity for ongoing cooperation in the face of emerging agricultural threats.
During the ceremony, OIRSA’s representatives reflected on the organization’s numerous accomplishments in its mission to control and eradicate pests and diseases that jeopardize the region’s agricultural productivity. The Ministry of Agriculture said in a statement that the importance of being prepared to face ongoing and new challenges cannot be overstated.
“These challenges include the African Swine Fever in the Dominican Republic, the Giant African Snail in Costa Rica and Nicaragua, the Fusarium Tropical Race 4 in South America, and the New World Screwworm, which is currently affecting Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and recently, Honduras and Guatemala,” the Ministry of Agriculture said in a statement.
“Since its establishment in 1953, OIRSA has worked tirelessly alongside the competent authorities and Ministries of Agriculture in the region to protect farmers and producers. The organization’s commitment to eradicating agricultural pests and diseases is a testament to the importance of regional cooperation and resource sharing in achieving food security.”
The Ministry of Agriculture also stressed the importance of OIRSA’s efforts, noting that continued collaboration is essential to address the emerging threats to agriculture.
OIRSA’s Regional Agricultural Health Day on the occasion of its 71st anniversary served as a poignant reminder of the vital role that organizations like OIRSA play in ensuring the health and productivity of agricultural systems in the region.
