By Horace Palacio: The Institute of Archaeology (NICH) Belize has announced the temporary suspension of visits to four popular archaeological sites due to elevated river levels. Effective as of 6:00 am on October 31, 2024, access to Xunantunich, Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM), Barton Creek, and Nohoch Che’en is suspended until further notice.

These sites, located near rivers or waterways, are especially vulnerable to rising water levels, posing safety risks for visitors. All other archaeological reserves in Belize remain open and operational. The Institute of Archaeology is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as conditions change.

Tour operators and tourists are advised to check with local authorities and follow official updates before planning trips to these sites. The Institute emphasizes that the closures are necessary to ensure the safety of both visitors and the heritage sites.
