By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The United Democratic Party (UDP), founded on September 27, 1973, has been a cornerstone of Belizean politics, emerging as a key opposition to the People’s United Party (PUP).

Formed from the merger of the National Independence Party, the People’s Development Movement, and a new Liberal Party, the UDP has experienced significant electoral successes over the years.

However, the party now faces internal turmoil.

The Alliance for Democracy, which includes notable “former” UDP members, held a national convention recently branding it a “Unity Convention.”

Despite strong support for a motion to recall the current party leader, the UDP denounced the convention as unconstitutional and accused the Alliance of causing confusion.

Tracy Panton countered this claim, asserting that the delegates involved are the same ones who supported UDP motions in August 2023, suggesting there should be no confusion.

Currently, supporters of the Alliance, including former Area Representative Anthony “Boots” Martinez, are at the UDP headquarters in Belize City, attempting to enter and occupy the offices.

Attorney Sheena Pitts stated that they have submitted an authorization request to the Commissioner of Police.

Clashes have erupted outside the headquarters between Alliance supporters and those loyal to Shyne Barrow.

Martinez clarified that there was no forced entry into the building.

“The people had a mandate as far as I am concerned. The mandate lets understand that this building belongs to the delegates of the party…….The people and delegates at any given time, the same people weh get you up deh da di same people could get you down here…that is the choice of the people,” Boots said.
