By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On October 16, 2024, the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) launched the new exhibit “Maya Creating Civilization” celebrating Indigenous Heritage.
Recently, NICH has launched numerous initiatives focusing on cultural development, including the Museum of Belizean Art, the Belize Music Project, and the access501 digital project.
In addition, an MoU was also signed to transform George Price’s family home into a vibrant educational space and botanical garden.
NICH now proudly presents “Maya Creating Civilization,” an educational exhibit designed to deepen understanding of Belize’s rich Maya culture.
This initiative builds on previous milestones, including Maya Masterpieces, which opened with the Museum of Belize in 2002, and the Maya Masterpieces exhibit launched in 2011.
“Maya Creating Civilization” invites visitors to explore sustainable agricultural practices, admire the Nim Li Punit Jade Wind Jewel, and engage with exquisite ceramics and stone works that showcase Maya artistry.
Using advanced technologies such as LiDAR and photogrammetry, the exhibit creates a dialogue between the past and present.
A special highlight of this exhibition features active Maya Forest Gardeners, artists, and craft makers making connections to their ancestry.
The Museum of Belize is opened from Monday to Saturday from 9:00am to 4:00pm. Saturdays are free for Belizeans.
