By Breaking Belize News Staff: Saul Rodas, a 27-year-old resident of San Pedro, is free tonight after spending over two years on remand for an attempted murder charge. Rodas was accused of the 2022 shooting of Darwin Ramirez, but his trial was dismissed Tuesday in the High Court.
Appearing before Justice Candace Nanton, Rodas learned that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had entered a nolle prosequi, meaning the charge was withdrawn and he was free to go. Rodas had been in prison since the allegations were made, but no trial was able to proceed.
In the 2022 incident, Ramirez told police he was approached by two armed men after leaving a gathering. He claimed one of the men, whom he identified as Rodas, gave the order to kill him before one of the gunmen shot him in the shoulder. Ramirez survived and received medical attention.
Rodas was represented by attorney Lynden Jones, and with the case now dismissed, he has returned home to his family.
