By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Men’s National Volleyball Team defeated Honduras 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-20) on Tuesday, October 15, in the 20th Under 21 Central American AFECAVOL Men’s Volleyball Championship in Panama and got closer to earning a medal at the regional tournament.
Honduras proved to be a relatively easy opponent compared to hosts Panama, who narrowly edged Belize 3-2 (24-26, 25-22, 20-25, 25-23, 18-16) in a high-powered game on Monday.
With the 3-0 victory over Honduras, Belize now holds a 3-2 record, surpassing Costa Rica, who were earlier defeated by Guatemala 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-16). Belize now have 15 points compared to Costa Rica’s ten.
Although Belize have only one game left, against El Salvador on Thursday, Costa Rica’s loss opens the door for a potential bronze medal. A win in their final game against El Salvador is highly anticipated, while Costa Rica still have to face Nicaragua and leaders Panama.
Jaelen Ingram was the top scorer with 17 points, including 13 from attacks, one block, and three serves. Captain Eleazar Mejia contributed 16 points, with 15 from attacks and one block. Preston Smith added ten points, and Ryan Usher contributed eight. Fernando Mejía led Honduras with nine points.
Belize outscored Honduras in attacks 39-24, in blocks 11-2, and in serves 8-6. However, Belize lost 26 points from unforced errors while only gaining 16 from Honduras’ errors.
In the final game on Tuesday, Panama will host Nicaragua at 7:00 pm.
Belize will rest on Wednesday.
