By Aaron Humes: A pair of Belize City siblings await trial for alleged arson of a property in Crooked Tree, Belize District in 2022.
21-year-old Janiece Shanice Augustine and her older sister, 24-year-old Janiene Justine Augustine, both of Jane Usher Boulevard, Belize City, are accused of setting afire a property valued at $32,000.
On Monday of this week, the duo saw their arson case concluded in a Preliminary Inquiry before a Senior Magistrate. They were committed to stand trial at the January 2025 session of the High Court set to commence on January 15. They had only been formally charged in April of this year by order of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The sisters were offered bail of $8,000 plus two sureties of $4,000 each which they met by the end of the day.
The younger sibling, Janiece Augustine, has been separately charged with an unrelated offense of aggravated assault with a dangerous instrument, to wit, a hammer. The incident is said to have occurred on September 30, 2024. Augustine pleaded not guilty and was offered bail of $2,000 plus one surety of the same amount, which she met. She is due back in court on this charge on December 2.
