A series of awareness sessions kicked off today at the National Agricultural & Trade Show conference room of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE).
These sessions are organized by the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise, Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), and the Organismo Internacional Regional de Sanidad Agropuecuaria (OIRSA) to create awareness and share crucial information with partners in the Ministry of Health & Wellness, Ministry of Sustainable Development & Climate Change, producer associations, wildlife organizations, and private veterinarians regarding the risks associated with the New World Screwworm.
Although not present in Belize, this highly detrimental and prolific pest of warm-blooded animals and humans is present in several Central and South American countries. It causes severe economic losses, trade restrictions, and loss of trade markets. It has caused the deaths of animals and, in rare cases, humans.
