By Horace Palacio: Belize is mourning the loss of former police officer Santiago Ciau Jr., who passed away yesterday at the age of 37 after a lengthy battle with a bone illness. Ciau, who had served his country with dedication, was forced into medical retirement from the police department in 2023 when his condition made it impossible for him to continue his duties.
Ciau was well-known for his easy-going nature and strong relationships within the police force and the community he served. His passing has left many reflecting on the positive impact he made during his career.
His story also drew public attention late last year when the Social Security Board controversially denied his request for invalidity benefits, despite his severe health condition. The decision sparked sympathy for Ciau, who had to continue living without an income while struggling with his illness.
