By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: In the wake of a brutal gang attack in central Haiti last Thursday, nearly 6,300 people have fled their homes, according to the U.N. migration agency.
The violence in Pont-Sondé, which occurred early Thursday, resulted in at least 70 deaths, with many victims shot in the head, the Associated Press reports.
Most of the displaced individuals are staying with relatives, while others have sought refuge in shelters, including a school. Eyewitnesses described chaos as gunmen entered homes to steal and burn property.
Prime Minister Garry Conille condemned the violence and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The U.N. Human Rights Office expressed horror at the attacks, while the European Union called for action against escalating gang violence.
The Haitian government has deployed an elite police unit to the area and is providing medical supplies to local hospitals.
Gang violence has surged in recent years, displacing over 700,000 people across Haiti, with many unable to return home due to safety concerns.
