By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belizean sales marketing agent from Belize City is facing upgraded charges following a tragic traffic accident in August 2024 that left a motorist critically injured, who later died. Dennis Lawrence Johnson, 43, a resident of Raccoon Street Extension, Belize City, appeared before the court on Monday where his charges were upgraded to manslaughter by negligence.
The accident, which occurred on August 9, 2024, between Mile 13 and 14 on the Philip Goldson Highway, involved Johnson’s white Toyota Hilux and a black Lifan motorcycle driven by 55-year-old Albert Garbutt. According to police reports, Johnson, who was traveling behind Garbutt, collided into the rear of the motorcycle, dragging Garbutt along the road before stopping to render aid. Garbutt sustained multiple severe injuries, including fractures and abrasions, and died a month later on September 9, 2024.
Johnson was initially charged with negligent grievous harm and driving without due care and attention. However, following Garbutt’s death, the charges were upgraded in court today to manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, and driving without due care. Johnson, who had been out on $3,000 bail, was granted new bail of $5,000, which he met.
Johnson is scheduled to return to court on October 23, 2024.
