By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 56-year-old homeless man, known for a history of theft and other dishonest crimes, was back in court on Monday to answer a new charge of theft. John Hoy, who told the court he sleeps near the Bus Terminal on the canal side in an abandoned building, appeared before a Magistrate in Court #5.
Hoy was accused of stealing a blue school bag containing $2,241.83 from a Chinese national, Xy Fen Zhoy, on Central American Boulevard on Friday, October 4, 2024. Despite pleading not guilty to the charge, the court Prosecutor objected to granting him bail. The Prosecutor cited Hoy’s lack of a fixed address, the rising prevalence of theft in the country, and the risk that Hoy might not appear for future court dates.
Hoy, unrepresented in court, hastily objected to the Prosecutor’s arguments but was repeatedly interrupted by the Magistrate, who denied him bail. Hoy was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until December 6, 2024. He had only recently been released from prison in August after serving time for a previous offense.
