By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The United States has expressed concern for the safety of United Nations peacekeepers in Lebanon amid escalating tensions, with State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasizing that the mission is vital for maintaining security in the region.
According to Reuters, Miller said that the U.S. does not want to see UN peacekeepers endangered including being attacked by Israel.
He noted that Israel’s ground operations in Lebanon remain limited but may expand as the conflict continues.
The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has raised alarms about Israel’s recent military activities near its positions.
The Israeli military has requested that UN peacekeepers relocate more than 5 kilometers from the border to ensure their safety.
As fighting intensifies, particularly with Hezbollah, over 1 million people in southern Lebanon have been displaced due to ongoing bombardments and military operations.
The U.S. has reiterated its support for keeping access to Beirut’s airport open.
