The Pallottine Centennial Memorial Project Committee is pleased to announce the receipt of grants through the efforts of Belizeans in the United States for the continued improvement of “Del Carmen Plaza in honor of the Pallottines” in Benque Viejo del Carmen.
The first grant was received earlier this year from “Benqueños in Chicago” which put in place the solar lighting system completed in August. The grant financed the erection of 3 lamp posts and solar lamps in strategic areas in the plaza, together with flood lights at the base of the monument of Sister Dominica Senn. The fund-raising efforts were spearheaded by Ms. Leticia Kuylen Castellanos, Belize’s Honorary Consul in Chicago.
The most recent grant was handed over by Ms. Miriam Chan Pacheco, coordinator of “Benqueños Heart-Belizean Hands” in Deerfield, Illinois. The grant will go towards the pergola project at the plaza.
The installation of the pergola is the last phase of development for the plaza. Earlier this year, The Pallottine Centennial Memorial Project Committee launched its appeal for the construction of a steel pergola which will facilitate the use and enjoyment of the plaza during the hot summer days. The generous donation of “Benqueños Heart-Belizean Hands” puts the appeal a step closer to its target. The project committee invites pledges from the public for the pergola to be installed early in 2025.
“Del Carmen Plaza in honour of the Pallottines” was inaugurated on November 20, 2022. The triangular-shaped plaza represents the bow of a ship, reminiscent of the transoceanic trip taken by the Pallottine Sisters to the Americas in 1912. The plaza serves as a green area for leisure, as well as an interactive space for cultural and social events. Mural space behind the life-size monument of Sister Dominica highlights the narrative of the Pallottines in Belize.
The Pallottine Sisters arrived in Benque Viejo del Carmen on March 19, 1913, at the invitation of Jesuit pastor, Fr. Arturo Versavel, with the purpose of serving as teachers. By 1963 when the Pallottines celebrated their Golden Jubilee, they had staffed most of the elementary schools and public hospitals throughout Belize.
“Del Carmen Plaza in honour of the Pallottines” was made possible through a generous contribution on behalf of the National Institute of History & Culture (NICH), the private sector, and patrons at home and abroad. For more information on the project contact its coordinator, David N. Ruiz.
