By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has issued a statement condemning the Government for failing to compensate over 135 teachers for September.

The UDP noted that the removal of these educators from the Smartstream system has created significant hardships and undermined the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU).

The UDP is urging the government to address this issue urgently.

“The UDP stands firmly in solidarity with our teachers and expressed deep concern for the welfare of our educators and, by extension, the future of our children,” the UDP said.

In addition, the UDP criticized the Briceno administration for failing to fulfill promises, such as a 20 percent salary increase and improved working conditions, while cutting benefits and scholarships for teacher training.

The UDP further said that these actions have led to a national teacher shortage and diminished morale among educators.

The UDP also called on the Minister of Education and senior officials to “return from their taxpayer-funded vacations to resolve this crisis.”
