By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Under-17 Women’s National Team (1-1) will face a tough challenge at 6:30 pm on Wednesday when they face undefeated hosts Nicaragua (2-0) in the closing game of Day 3 of the first-ever Central American U17 Women’s Championship in Managua. Belize are coming off an important win over Guatemala, whom they defeated 3-1 (25-17, 25-21, 26-28, 25-21) on Wednesday at Nicaragua’s Institute of Sports Volleyball Gymnasium (IND).
The win over Guatemala (1-1) puts our young women in contention for a medal after falling 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-23) in the opening match to Costa Rica (2-0) on Tuesday.
Belize opened Wednesday going tough against Guatemala and beating them 3-1 (25-17, 25-21, 26-28, 25-21). Belize were led by captain Akili Jones, who amassed 27 points.
The Nicaragua game is crucial to both sides as a victory keeps their aspirations for a medal alive. Expect a vibrant game with Belize pushing themselves to the max to upend the hosts, who will be doing the same.
Currently, Costa Rica, who earned their second win when they beat El Salvador 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-19) on Tuesday, lead over Nicaragua on points (10-9). Guatemala follow in third place with six points over Belize, who have four. Honduras (0-2) with one point and El Salvador (0-2) without any trail.
Ahead of the Belize-Nicaragua match set for 6:30 pm, Costa Rica open against Guatemala at 1:30 pm. Then, El Salvador battle Honduras at 4:00 pm in the fight to not finish last in the regional tournament.
