By Rubén Morales Iglesias: While many Belizeans gallivant in Belize City with the Carnival Road March, the Belize Men’s National Football Team (BMNT) will be taking the field against Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) at the TCI Football Association Stadium in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands, in their quest to regain promotion to the Concacaf League B.
The BMNT traveled to Turks and Caicos Islands on Tuesday, trained on Thursday and Friday, and on Saturday at 1:00 PM (3:00 PM TCI time) will be facing the islanders.
On Wednesday, TCI fell 2-0 to Anguilla, who will be Belize’s next opponents on Tuesday, September 10 at the same time and venue to complete the first round of the double round robin.
The BMNT will be returning to Turks and Caicos for the Concacaf League October window to finish the double round robin, seeking to top the Group B and qualify for League B next season.
Concacaf said the three group winners plus the best second-place teams will advance.
Belize fell out of League B last year under previous coach David Pérez from Spain. Recently, the Football Federation of Belize dropped Pérez and hired Belizean Charlie Slusher, who called several young players to the BMNT with the hopes of turning things around and improving the level.
In other League C matches on Saturday, Bahamas will play Barbados at 2:00 pm (4:00 pm US Virgin Islands time) in Group A and Cayman will face St. Kitts and Nevis at 2:30 pm (3:30 pm Cayman Islands time) in Group C.
