By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On September 4, 2024, the Government of Belize and the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) marked a significant milestone with the signing of a 5-year, US$125 million grant agreement.
Following the ceremony, U.S. Ambassador Michelle Kwan and the MCC delegation, visited four schools to discuss how the grant will enhance educational opportunities across Belize.
The delegation’s tour included Maud Williams High School and Edward P. Yorke High School, as well as the Grant Aided Managing Authority of Schools (GAMAS).
These visits provided valuable insights into the unique challenges facing Belizean schools. The group also visited Buttonwood Bay Nazarene Primary School to investigate factors contributing to low enrollment rates in secondary education.
Throughout the tour, Ambassador Kwan and the MCC team engaged with students and teachers to gain a deeper understanding of the primary obstacles hindering educational excellence in Belize.
The grant is aimed at addressing these challenges significantly, with approximately 80% of the funding dedicated to enhancing outcomes in secondary education and technical and vocational education training (TVET).
The remaining 20% of the grant will focus on reducing the wholesale cost of electricity.
This portion of the grant will support Belize’s renewable energy initiatives, modernize the electricity grid, and facilitate new solar power purchase agreements with independent producers.
This grant represents a crucial investment in Belize’s educational and energy sectors, aiming to foster long-term growth and development across the nation.
