By Aaron Humes: A family dispute between a brother and his sister led police to arrest and charge a Berry Street resident with five counts of aggravated assault with a firearm.

39-year-old Leon Yorke, a Maintenance Worker at Princess Hotel & Casino, appeared on Monday before Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola. He was read five counts of aggravated assault with a firearm on his sister, 31-year-old Asha Yorke of Berry Street, Belize City; their brother Kareem Yorke; and Asha’s three children, all minors.

Yorke is accused of, on Friday, August 23, arming himself with a firearm, aiming the gun at his sister who was in the company of her children and their brother, and firing shots in their direction. Luckily, he missed and no one was injured.

Yorke pleaded not guilty. Due to the nature of the offense, bail was denied and he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until November 27, when he is expected to be provided with disclosure in the matter.

Responding police found ten expended shells in the area. They were informed that the five complainants and Kyle Allen of Nutmeg Street were in front of Asha’s home when she got into an argument with Leon Yorke, alias “Beef.” As a result, Leon Yorke left and returned armed with what appeared to be a firearm and whilst on Berry Street pointed the firearm at their direction and opened fire. All persons took cover and no one was injured.
