By Aaron Humes: An Orange Walk Town resident currently working in the United States must pay $2,000 in fines after slipping up by sending more than the maximum allowed amount of marijuana stashed in a box shipped from Florida.
Ermelindo Aragon, 59, works in Florida as a property caretaker and maintenance person. He previously shipped boxes of items to Belize and on August 19 went to pick them up at the Port of Belize compound in Belize City. However, a search of the boxes produced 18 grams of cannabis in a glass jar.
Aragon was charged with importation of controlled drugs, similar to drug trafficking, and appeared in court on Friday where he pleaded guilty. He explained that he uses it to relieve symptoms of insomnia, anxiety, and arthritis due to bad knees, and that in Florida, you can walk into certain stores and purchase marijuana in small quantities. He said he mistook the amount of cannabis one can have in person and sent to Belize which is 10 grams.
Aragon faced as much as a $10,000 fine and three years’ imprisonment, but as a first-time offender, he was spared and ordered to pay $3,000, discounted by a third to $2,000, and cost of court, due by November 29. If he does not pay, he will spend a year in jail.
