By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Belize has completed Phase 1 of its Digital Inclusion Program, marking a significant step towards expanding digital access nationwide.
Spearheaded by the Ministry of Public Utilities, Energy, Logistics, and E-Governance (MPUELE) in collaboration with Taiwan’s International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the program aims to enhance digital accessibility for marginalized communities.
Under this initiative, 14 Digital Connect Centers have been established across Belize, including locations in San Ignacio, Bullet Tree Village, Santa Familia Village, Valley of Peace, Belmopan, San Narciso, Santa Martha, Carmelita, Trial Farm, Ladyville, Belize City, Caye Caulker, Pomona, and San Antonio, Toledo.
These centers are equipped with computers, high-speed internet, and other ICT resources to facilitate online government services and digital skills training.
Phase 1 also featured 20 digital skills training sessions, conducted both virtually and in-person, where 356 youths received instruction in Microsoft Office Essentials.
Looking ahead, Phase 2 will focus on digital skills training for the elderly, supported by UNDP and the Ministry of Human Development, Families and Indigenous People’s Affairs.
This next phase will also collaborate with the National Council of Aging to broaden the program’s reach.
The establishment of these Digital Connect Centers represents a major leap forward in bridging the digital divide in Belize, with ongoing support from project partners and the Government of Belize.
