By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Derrick Chavarria and Kaya Cattouse won the Men’s Elite and Women’s races, respectively, in the 5th Bernice Wade Memorial Cycling Classic in Bermudian Landing on Sunday, August 18, 2024.
Chavarria clocked two hours, ten minutes, and nine seconds (2:10:09) for the 50-mile race riding at a speed of 23.0 miles per hour.
“The 2024 edition of the Bernice Wade Memorial Cycling Race and Back-to-School event was a resounding success, marking the 5th edition of this cherished tradition in the beautiful Belize River Valley community,” said organizer Dwayne Wade.
“In addition to the races, the main event known as ‘The Big Dance’ saw us distribute over 250 backpacks and provide complimentary lunches for 150 cyclists.
“We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who contributed to making this year’s event memorable. We hope all participants enjoyed the experience as much as we did organizing it,” Wade said.
The race is held annually in memory of Wade’s mother, Mrs. Bernie Wade.
“My mom was one of the most loving, sharing, and caring individuals. Unfortunately, she passed away at the tender age of 64 on September 3, 1999,” Wade said. “She was known in the River Valley Community for her spirit of love, her spirit of sharing and caring for everyone. That was what we were most proud of and that’s kind of the spirit that we carry on for this event.”
“Thanks to the Wade family for organizing a great family fun day of racing,” the Belize Cycling Federation said. “Thanks also to the race officials, police support, and all the community members who came out to support the race.”
Wade said the Men’s Junior prize and trophy were given in memory of cyclist Mateo Cruz, who passed away recently.
