By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Dissent within the United Democratic Party (UDP) continues as standard bearers Tracy Panton, Patrick Faber, Beverly Williams and John Saldivar are demanding a national convention with hopes of replacing their party leader Shyne Barrow.
Following a recent response by UDP chairman Micheal Peyrefitte where he formally rejected a petition submitted by second Deputy Leader Williams to hold a national convention, the standard bearers replied that they “will take whatever actions necessary to force your compliance with the party’s constitution.”
Since then Panton has been making her media rounds sharing that the UDP is being held hostage.
“I have tried to call the chairman three times. He has not taken my call. In fact, I thought he was out of the country, but then I saw him at the event yesterday, the music project launch, so he is in the country. He has just chosen not to respond and that is wholly, wholly unacceptable.
The democracy in the UDP has been compromised,” Panton told 7News Belize.
“We cannot have it, and we are going to continue to do everything within our power. We will take whatever steps we need to take. We’re in consultation right now with a few attorneys,” Panton added.
Panton says that this is unprecedented for the UDP.
