By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology extended its warmest wishes for International Youth Day.
“We are committed to empowering Belize’s youth with the knowledge, attitudes and skills they need to lead, transform and inspire positive change in our Jewel,” the Ministry said.
As highlighted by the United Nations, half of the global population is under 30, a figure set to reach 57% by 2030.
A recent survey shows 67% of people are hopeful about the future, with 15 to 17-year-olds being the most optimistic.
Despite this optimism, there is a significant call for more youth representation in politics, with 69% of people agreeing that increased opportunities for young people would enhance political systems.
Currently, only 2.6% of parliamentarians worldwide are under 30, with less than 1% being young women.
Digitalization is pivotal in accelerating sustainable development, with digital technologies playing a key role in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Young people are at the forefront of this digital revolution, with 75% of those aged 15 to 24 using the internet in 2022.
However, challenges remain, particularly in low-income countries and among young women who often face barriers to accessing digital resources.
The U.N. noted that as we approach the 2030 SDG deadline, it is crucial to support and harness the digital potential of youth to address global challenges effectively.
Let us celebrate and encourage the digital innovation of our youth, fostering their role in achieving a sustainable future.
