UDP Chairman rejects petition for National Convention

By Breaking Belize News Staff: United Democratic Party (UDP) Chairman Michael Peyrefitte has formally rejected a petition submitted by Second Deputy Leader Beverly Williams. 

On August 5, 2024, Williams sought the convening of a national convention within 90 days, leveraging the support of one-quarter of the delegates. 

However, Peyrefitte’s response has dismissed the petition as impractical and contrary to a resolution passed at the party’s national convention in August 2023.

Peyrefitte’s letter to Williams underscored that the petition contradicts the resolutions agreed upon in the last national convention, which took place nearly a year ago. 

The decision adds to the ongoing tensions within the party, particularly among supporters of Tracy Panton, who have been vocal in their opposition to current party leader Shyne Barrow.

The faction’s attempts to challenge Barrow’s leadership have so far been met with strong resistance from Peyrefitte and other party stalwarts.
