By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Human rights NGO, Laboratorio de Paz, reported 71 arbitrary detentions in Venezuela within days of the presidential election campaign kickoff.
According to CNN, the detentions occurred between July 4 and 14, primarily in the state of Táchira.
According to the report, 48 of those detained had ties to the campaign of opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia of the Democratic Unitary Platform.
The NGO also documented 26 instances of harassment, 11 obstructions to free movement, two closures of premises, and three raids. These incidents are described as part of a “recurring pattern” of political targeting in Venezuela.
Critics have long accused President Maduro’s government of election rigging and suppressing opposition voices.
The 2018 election, which saw Maduro return to power, was deemed illegitimate by an alliance of 14 Latin American nations, Canada, and the United States.
This election cycle has also been contentious, with 2 opposition candidates, María Corina Machado and Corina Yoris, barred from running despite Maduro’s pledge to hold free elections in exchange for sanctions relief.
Two days after Laboratorio de Paz’s report, Machado alleged on social media that her security chief, Milciades Ávila, was arrested by the Maduro regime.
