By Horace Palacio: President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he will not seek reelection, opting instead to focus on fulfilling his duties for the remainder of his term.
In a letter to the American people, Biden cited significant accomplishments during his presidency, including building the strongest economy in the world, making historic investments in infrastructure, reducing prescription drug costs for seniors, expanding affordable healthcare, and providing crucial care for veterans. His administration also appointed the first African American woman to the Supreme Court and passed major climate legislation.
Biden expressed gratitude for the support of the American people, noting their resilience through unprecedented challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and economic crises. “Together, we have protected and preserved our Democracy,” he said.
Reflecting on his tenure, Biden called serving as President the greatest honor of his life. Although he initially intended to seek reelection, he believes stepping down is in the best interest of his party and the country.
Biden thanked Vice President Kamala Harris for her partnership and the American people for their trust. He reiterated his belief in America’s potential, stating, “There is nothing America can’t do when we do it together.”
Biden is expected to address the nation later this week to discuss his decision in more detail. His announcement sets the stage for a presidential election without an incumbent candidate.
