By Aaron Humes: The People’s United Party’s Dr Osmond Martinez has won the Toledo East by-election with 3,268 votes to 1,169 votes for Dennis Williams for the United Democratic Party (UDP) and 202 votes for the People’s National Party’s (PNP) Wil Maheia, with 44 spoilt ballots.
The candidate gave thanks for the victory and said that his victory was not solely due to Bella Vista where is he from and which had the highest turnout, but also in P.G. and even in Monkey River and other areas.
Prime Minister John Briceño told reporters that he was excited about the inroads the party has made in traditional UDP strongholds such as Monkey River and Barranco, as much as its dominance in Punta Gorda Town and Bella Vista.
But he again resisted the idea of calling an early general election, though he pointed out that the party is not losing popularity even four years into its term: “If the PUP was not popular, they would have voted against us. In most instances, they would have voted against and not for, but in this instance, the people have voted for us…we are on a trend that the people are seeing the work that we are doing. We were elected to work, not to boast and be vindictive…” He also cited the municipal elections results, in which the party won everywhere but San Ignacio.
And he also headed off questions about giving out money to voters, saying elections are as much as about a relationship with voters and that is his message to the party’s candidates: keep working hard and in 2025, the spoils of another five-year mandate will be the party’s.
Concerning issues with voters getting to the polls, the P.M. noted that weather and climate change have played a role in undoing infrastructural improvements and also that Toledo has nearly twice as many villages, for example, as his native Orange Walk District, and it is up to the Government to find solutions.
