By Aaron Humes: Some 2,058 voters have cast votes in the Toledo East by-election which kicked off at 7 a.m.
As of 12 noon per the Elections and Boundaries Department, 26 percent of registered voters across the constituency have cast votes.
The People’s United Party (PUP) is defending the seat held by the late Mike Espat with now-former CEO in the Ministry of Economic Development Osmond Martinez. Party leader and Prime Minister John Briceno touted his humble origins, saying that rather than pursuing outside glory, he has dedicated his time to serving the constituency he is originally from. He says they will do their best to bring out the voters and avoid complacency, focusing particularly on Martinez’s stomping grounds of Bella Vista in northern Toledo.
The United Democratic Party counters with Dennis “Desho” Martinez, a Punta Gorda Town native touted as a son of the soil compared to Martinez, allegedly born in Honduras to Belizean parents. The Opposition are seeking to build momentum for the forthcoming general election.
In the role of spoiler is the People’s National Party’s Wil Maheia, a perennial candidate who is aiming for at least 500 votes or he may consider hanging up his political hat, as he told KREM News on Tuesday.
Polls close at 6 p.m. and counting begins at 8 p.m., expected to finish by midnight.
