By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Tuesday, July 9, 2024, 25 producers from the New River Farmers’ Co-operative in San Carlos, Orange Walk attended the final session of the training program, module 3, covering Calibration, Nozzle Types, and Pesticide Dosage Calculations.
The training was part of a collaborative training between Resilient Rural Belize (RRB), the Pesticide Control Board (PCB), and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE).
The program began in November 2023 as a national training initiative for Producer Organizations under the Resilient Rural Belize Programme in Responsible Pesticide Management.
The session concluded with participants receiving Personal Protective Equipment and a pair of rubber boots each.
Additionally, 5 small pesticide storage units were raffled among the participants.
The distribution of Personal Protective Equipment and pesticide storage units underscores the commitment of RRB, PCB, and MAFSE to support farmers with the necessary resources to implement what they have learned.
“This initiative not only boosts the confidence of the producers in handling pesticides safely but also aligns with the broader goals of the Resilient Rural Belize Programme in fostering resilient and sustainable agricultural communities,” the Ministry said.
Present for the training were PCB Technicians Nonato Canto and Edgar Silva, Extension Officer Carlos Tzul, Cooperative Officer Francis Vega, and Resilient Rural Belize Officers Alfred Serano, Mrs. Sandra Medina, and Cornelio Tzib.
“Looking ahead, the collaborating organizations are hopeful that the knowledge gained from this training will be disseminated throughout the farming communities, further reinforcing the principles of responsible pesticide use and contributing to the overall resilience and sustainability of Belize’s agricultural sector,” the Ministry added.
