Belize braces for wet weekend with showers, thunderstorms, and rain

By Horace Palacio: Belizeans can expect a wet weekend, with moist and unstable conditions prevailing across the country. The National Meteorological Service of Belize has issued a forecast for today, June 29, 2024, predicting mostly cloudy skies with showers, thunderstorms, and periods of rain. These conditions are expected to be particularly prevalent in northern areas.

Mariners should exercise caution as winds are expected to blow from the east-southeast at 10-20 knots, creating moderate to rough sea conditions with waves reaching 5-7 feet. A small craft caution is in effect, advising operators to be wary of gusty winds and locally rough seas in heavy showers and thunderstorms.

Temperatures along the coast will range from 86°F (30°C) to 81°F (27°C), while inland areas will experience highs of 90°F (32°C) and lows of 73°F (23°C). In the hills, temperatures will vary between 78°F (27°C) and 68°F (20°C).

In addition to the small craft caution, an excessive rainfall watch has been issued for central and northern areas of the country. Residents are advised to monitor the weather situation and contact the Hydrology Unit for updates on potential flooding.

The region is also being monitored for potential tropical development. A broad area of low pressure over the northwestern Caribbean Sea, associated with a tropical wave, is producing widespread shower and thunderstorm activity. There is a medium chance of this system developing into a tropical depression or storm as it moves towards the Bay of Campeche.

Tropical Storm Beryl, located east-southeast of Barbados, is expected to strengthen into a hurricane as it approaches the Windward Islands.

While a few outbreaks of showers and isolated thunderstorms may affect mainly northern areas on Sunday morning, these are expected to decrease and become more isolated throughout the country by Sunday night.
