Showers and thunderstorms expected across Belize as tropical wave approaches

By Horace Palacio: Belize is bracing for cloudy skies, showers, and thunderstorms as a strong tropical wave sweeps across the region, according to the National Meteorological Service.

The weather system is expected to bring scattered showers and thunderstorms across most areas today, with continued cloudy conditions and precipitation overnight, particularly in northern districts.

An excessive rainfall watch has been issued for the entire country over the next 48 hours, with residents advised to monitor the situation and contact the Hydrology Unit for information on potential flooding.

In the western Caribbean Sea, a broad area of low pressure associated with the tropical wave is producing widespread shower and thunderstorm activity. While this system has a low chance of development, another low-pressure system over the Tropical Atlantic has a high probability of strengthening into a tropical depression or storm within the next 48 hours. This system is projected to approach the Lesser Antilles by the end of the weekend.

Temperatures across Belize will vary, with coastal areas experiencing highs of 87°F (31°C) and lows of 79°F (26°C). Inland areas can expect warmer conditions, reaching 92°F (33°C) during the day and cooling down to 74°F (23°C) at night. Hilly regions will see milder temperatures ranging from 79°F (26°C) to 68°F (20°C).

Mariners are advised to exercise caution due to moderate sea states with waves of 4-6 feet and east-northeast winds of 10-15 knots.

Residents are urged to stay informed about weather updates and be prepared for potential disruptions caused by the tropical wave.
