International News: Massive power outage in Ecuador due to transmission failure

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Wednesday, Ecuador successfully restored power across the nation following a widespread electricity outage that affected residential areas, hospitals, and the capital’s subway system. Officials attributed the outage to issues with transmission lines.

Roberto Luque, the Minister of Public Works, reported on social media that as of late Wednesday afternoon, 95% of electricity service had been reinstated.

He acknowledged insufficient maintenance as a contributing factor to the outage, emphasizing ongoing challenges in the country’s energy sector.

“What happened today is just more proof of the energy crisis we’re dealing with,” he said.

Luque, who also serves as interim Energy Minister, emphasized that the outage was exacerbated by inadequate investment in transmission infrastructure, highlighting the need for better planning and resources.

In April, Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa declared an energy emergency and announced plans for electricity rationing measures in response to ongoing challenges in the sector.

Wednesday’s blackout created hazardous conditions for motorists due to non-functional traffic lights and interrupted operations on Quito’s subway for several hours.

Ecuador has faced difficulties in power generation due to a drought impacting hydroelectric plants, exacerbated recently by heavy rains that forced authorities to shut down three hydroelectric facilities.
