Curaçao’s Rose Mary Allen has received a 2024 Cultuurfonds Award. Here is a post by Peter Jordens (including his translation from the Dutch).

The Cultuurfonds is a fund that supports projects in the fields of culture and nature conservation in The Netherlands and the Dutch Caribbean through financial contributions, assignments, prizes and scholarships. The Cultuurfonds Award is bestowed annually upon a maximum of five people who have made a special lifetime contribution to culture and nature. It was the Cultuurfonds Dutch Caribbean (PBCCG) that nominated Rose Mary Allen for the Award. She is one of the five Award recipients for 2024; the other four recipients are based in The Netherlands. The award ceremony took place on June 3, 2024, in Utrecht, The Netherlands.

Rose Mary Allen is Extraordinary Professor of Culture, Community and History at the University of Curaçao Dr. Moises da Costa Gomez (UoC). She previously received the 2011 Boeli van Leeuwen Prize, https://repeatingislands.com/2011/10/11/rose-mary-allen-receives-boeli-van-leeuwen-prize, and the 2015 Cola Debrot Prize, https://repeatingislands.com/2015/05/06/rose-mary-allen-receives-cola-debrot-prize, from the government of Curaçao. Allen was knighted in the Netherlands Order of Orange-Nassau in 2015. This year (2024), she also received recognition from the Curaçaoan chapter of the Soroptomist International Club on the occasion of International Women’s Day (March 8).

Allen has received a 2024 Cultuurfonds Award for her valuable contribution to the cultural heritage and history of Curaçao. The Cultuurfonds’ letter of congratulation to Allen reads:

“Through your intensive, particular research, you ensure that Curaçao’s transmitted narratives about the history of slavery, the origins of families, traditions and customs are preserved and passed on to the younger generations. In this way, stories and songs from the past are brought back to life and relate what really happened. In doing so, you have disclosed valuable (re)sources for many who want to and should know history. Through your research, including many interviews with ancestors, your books, lectures, workshops, and through significant personal involvement, you ensure that what you have discovered becomes accessible to everyone. And that is why we are presenting the Cultuurfonds Award to you this year.”
