Groundbreaking for Yum Kaax Archeological Project at Mopan Tech High School

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On June 4, 2024, there was a groundbreaking ceremony for Yum Kaax Archeological Project at the Mopan Technical High School.

The project is being led by Dr. Antonio Beardall. 

Students from Mopan Tech and other institutions will be participating in the excavations under the leadership of archeologist Beardall.

Attendees at the groundbreaking included Felicita Cantun (Community, Cultural, Sport Activist, Educator, Artisan, Herbal Practitioner, Traditional Storyteller), Mayor of Benque Viejo Jorge Rosales, Principal Katie Jones of Mopan Tech and teachers and students.

The Benque House of Culture was represented by Nayelli Yacab.

A group of students from Puerto Rico along with their leaders were also at the event.

The project is the first of its kind in any high school in Belize.
