By Aaron Humes: Two of Belize’s four sugar cane growers associations were reportedly suspended since February by Flocert – the body responsible for regulating the Fairtrade protocol.
Produce certified by Fairtrade can be deemed to be made in the best possible labour and production situations and attracts better prices for growers.
The CSCPA recorded multiple violations but neither organization was prepared to respond publicly to our colleagues at XTV News except in the case of the CSCPA to say corrective action is being undertaken.
The Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association (BSCFA) continues to press its issue of lost premiums for previous sugar seasons which it says was unfairly withheld by Belize Sugar Industries Limited, which in turn insists it has nothing to do with Fairtrade.
