Murder trial kicks off against woman who allegedly killed sister-in-law in 2021

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Wednesday marked the beginning of trial at the High Court for 28-year-old Leanne Elizabeth Davis, who is facing charges of murder in the stabbing death of her sister-in-law, Venecia Staine, nearly three years ago. The trial, presided over by Justice Candace Nanton in a judge-alone setting, commenced with an emotional testimony from the niece of the deceased, who recounted her aunt’s murder in front of her on April 4, 2021.

Davis, who pleaded not guilty to the charges, is being represented by attorney Leeroy Banner, while Crown Counsel Robert Lord presented the case for the prosecution. The court heard from the 18-year-old niece, who described witnessing Davis allegedly stab her aunt during a confrontation outside her grandmother’s shop in Gracie Rock Village.

In a tearful testimony, the witness recalled the events leading up to the fatal altercation, detailing a heated argument between Davis and Staine, culminating in a violent confrontation where Staine was fatally wounded.

According to the niece, she attempted to intervene and disarm Davis but was unsuccessful, eventually prompting her grandfather to intervene, resulting in injuries to both the witness and Davis. Additional statements from agreed witnesses were presented by the Crown, further corroborating the events surrounding the incident.

As the trial progresses, the Crown is expected to call several more witnesses, including another eyewitness to the stabbing.
