Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) Experiences Failure at Maskall Substation, Resulting in Unplanned Power Outage for San Pedro, Ambergris Caye

Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) informs our Customers and the public that the critical failure of a major component of the single transformer at our Maskall Substation in the Belize District has resulted in an unplanned power outage affecting the entire San Pedro, Ambergris Caye as of 10:20 a.m. today. Fortunately, our technicians were able to intervene in time to avoid a total failure of the entire transformer.

To expedite the restoration of power supply to the island, our teams are in the process of transporting our mobile substation transformer from BEL’s Westlake Substation (at Mile 8 George Price Highway) to the Maskall Substation where it will be installed in place of the damaged transformer. Given the complex logistics of this operation, we expect to be able to restore power to Customers in San Pedro until approximately 11:30 p.m. tonight (May 1, 2024).

BEL apologizes for any inconvenience caused by this unforeseen event and assures the public that every effort is being made to restore power as quickly and safely as possible.

We thank our Customers and the public for their understanding and patience as we continue to make every effort to maintain stable and reliable electricity supply to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye.
