Man gets one month for crack possession but could spend up to two years in jail for old fines

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Jose Luis Gonzalez, 48, has been sentenced to one month in jail for possession of crack cocaine and using insulting words.

Gonzalez appeared in court unrepresented on Tuesday and was read charges of possession of a controlled drug, using insulting words and public drinking but the public drinking charge was later withdrawn.

Gonzalez pleaded guilty to possession of one gram of crack and insulting words. For possession he was sentenced to two weeks in prison and for insulting words, he was sentenced to one month, which will run concurrently. 

The court also found that Gonzalez had old fines totaling around $3,000 which he could not pay. If he cannot settle those fines, he may spend as much as two years in prison.
