Prime Minister John Briceño: “Orange Walk will go blue once again”

By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister John Briceño told Channel 5 News that the vote in his native Orange Walk Town is a “foregone conclusion” as Ladrick Sheppard and his team will be elected at the end of the evening.

However, he acknowledged that the People’s United Party (PUP) will have to scrap for every vote in the acknowledged United Democratic Party (UDP) stronghold of San Ignacio/Santa Elena and hold their own in Belmopan, as well as Belize City.

The P.M. expressed hope that the party can take advantage of split votes in Punta Gorda Town to hold off the UDP there, and reported that the party is leading every box in San Pedro Town.

He gave thanks to his supporters in Orange Walk Central expressing regret that he has had to divide his time with visits to every municipality.

According to the P.M., the Central Government will make every effort to monitor the work of municipal councils through the Constituency Development Fund, but also said that today’s vote is an outgrowth of the work the Central Government has been doing in reducing unemployment, boosting social services and helping industry as with the announced GCF funding to support cane farmers.

All politics remain local in terms of issues, but national issues do play a role, the P.M. said, recalling how the party was embarrassed in 2006 en route to a wipeout in the 2008 general elections.
