Nearly 13 thousand ballots cast in first hours of voting in 2024 municipal elections

By Aaron Humes: The 2024 municipal elections are off and running countrywide.

According to the official Elections and Boundaries Department voter app, some 12,453 ballots have been cast through 9 a.m. Polls opened at 7 a.m.

Belize City is unusually leading the way with 13.7 percent turnout, followed by San Ignacio/Santa Elena with 12.27 percent. Dangriga and Corozal are trailing at 10.2 percent each.

101,190 registered electors are eligible to vote across 224 polling stations from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. with counting expected to start soon thereafter.

The ruling People’s United Party is defending eight mayoralties and 57 councilor seats and the United Democratic Party one of each, both in San Ignacio.

Voter turnout is expected to finish in the 50 to 60 percent range as it has for recent elections.
