Belize Bank, Mastercard launch “Girls4Tech” program to promote STEM

By Aaron Humes: The Belize Bank Limited is pleased to announce an exciting collaboration with Mastercard International to introduce STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) workshops through the worldwide established program, “Girls 4 Tech” in Belize.

For the initial phase, the Bank is piloting the program with Belize Elementary School and St. Joseph R.C. Primary School, accommodating 300 girls aged between 8 and 13 years old.

Education Minister Francis Fonseca says Belize intends to get in on the international science and technology revolution for girls and women and is happy to participate in what is a priority issue for his Ministry: “We don’t want our girls to be left out; traditionally, girls have not been a part of science and technology – science, and technology, has been viewed traditionally as an area for men and boys. I think there is a global effort and Belize wants to be part of that effort and the Ministry of Education is working to make sure that girls are included, that they have the opportunity to develop the skills that are important to science and technology.” STEM development, he added, has been part of the Ministry’s development push for the past two years with the establishment of the first STEAM academy in Belize, the It’zat Academy in Belize City.

The Girls 4 Tech workshops are scheduled to take place during the week of March 4th-8th, 2024. These specially tailored workshops for young girls promise engaging, interactive, and educational sessions, each lasting 2-3 hours per group. Participants will explore coding, fraud detection, and various digital concepts. The curriculum, developed in collaboration with esteemed Mastercard engineers and technologists, adheres to global science and math standards.
